Alternative Education in Greece
What is legally possible, what is not, and how families can navigate their options with clarity.
The legal framework in Greece
In Greece, compulsory education applies to all resident children from the age of 4 to 15.
If your family is resident in Greece, children must be enrolled in a Greek public or private school. At present, homeschooling, international online schools, or foreign distance-learning programmes are not legally recognised for resident children.
Families who are not resident in Greece, and who remain legally registered in another country, may follow the home education or distance-learning frameworks of their country of residence, including international or online curricula.
This distinction, residency, not nationality, is key.
Understanding “alternative” options in Greece
In Greece, many initiatives described as alternative education operate outside the compulsory school framework.
Most of these options are:
Designed for children under 4 or over 15
Intended for short-term stays or non-resident families
Offered as informal or non-formal education, not as a replacement for school
These include kindergartens, forest schools, learning hubs, creative ateliers, and community-based programmes.
They can be rich, meaningful learning environments, but they do not replace mandatory school enrolment for resident children aged 4–15.
Understanding what these spaces are and what they are not legally, helps families make informed, safe choices.
Navigating legal and educational pathways
Within the legal framework, some public and private schools in Greece are inspired by democratic education principles, experiential learning, and child-led practices.
These schools operate legally while integrating:
Shared decision-making
Project-based and hands-on learning
Strong emphasis on autonomy and responsibility
For families seeking alternative approaches, these schools often represent the closest alignment between educational values and legal requirements.
