ESC Teams volunteering from September 2nd to October 2nd : Hands & Hearts: A Month of Sustainable Living and Community Building

Hey there, adventurous spirits aged 18 to 30!

Are you ready to embark on a journey that will transform your life? Imagine spending a whole month on the enchanting island of Skiathos, Greece. Picture yourself waking up to the sound of the cicadas, surrounded by lush landscapes and vibrant community vibes. At Joyce ‘n’ Fun, we’re inviting you to join us from September 2nd for an unforgettable experience in communal living, funded by the European Solidarity Corps.

What ?

ESC Teams volunteering : Hands & Hearts: A Month of Sustainable Living and Community Building

Who ?

For 18-30-year-olds passionate about community living and sustainability, ready to get hands-on, share their talents, and engage in mutual learning.

Where?

On the magical mountain of the beautiful island of Skiathos, Greece, in our newly-established farm, Joy’ce Kingdom

When ?

From September 2nd (arrival day) to October 3rd (departure day) 2024

Accomodation ?

Wild camping style, in the nature, in your tents or other type of accomodation  (spots in tents, caravans and vans might be provided depending on availability), compost toilets, outdoor showers.

How to arrive ?

Here are some options for getting to Skiathos:

  1. Direct Flight from Athens: The easiest way is to check which days there are flights from Athens to Skiathos and plan your arrival in Athens accordingly. While it might be slightly more expensive than taking the bus and boat, it’s definitely more convenient.

  2. Bus and Boat from Athens: The second easiest way is to take a bus from Athens to Mantoudi and catch a boat to Skiathos. When booking your bus ticket, remember that the port is called Kymasi—don’t head to the village of Mantoudi! Alternatively, boats also depart from Agios Konstantinos and Volos. You can check the schedules for all these routes on Openseas.

  3. Boats from Thessaloniki: Seajet’s Speedrunner offers service from Thessaloniki to Skiathos. Check the Openseas website for the latest updates on this route.

  4. Charter Flights: During the summer, there are charter flights directly to Skiathos or Volos from England, Italy, France, Germany and more. It’s worth checking these options as well!

Who are the trainers/facilitators ?

Andreas Papachristou, member of the Stagones Social Cooperative (Natural Building and Organic Farming) and initiator of the Hara-Goe project, an educational, cultural and artistic hub on Evia island, Greece will spend the first week with us and facilitate the building of an oven with material found on the land.

“When I decided to live close to nature, natural building for creating a shelter for me and my family was the obvious choice. Not only because of the many advantages (low imprint, use of local, organic materials, creation of healthy and friendly living spaces) but also because we valued the process of imagining, designing and constructing our home with the help of our friends. When people are able to build homes and cultivate food, they are regaining strength and meaning. In that aspect, natural building is extending beyond the obvious of the practical, to realms of self-knowledge and collectivity. This is something I like to point out during the workshops I give and it is always reflected in the dynamic of the group.”

Richard, Daphne, Fanis, Sarah and Kamil are some of the trainers who are preparing workshops for this month’s volunteers. Stay put for their bio.

How much does it cost ?

The entire month is fully funded by the European Solidarity Corps, covering your stay, including three daily vegetarian/vegan meals, and providing a travel cost refund of up to 211, 309 or even 395 EUR, depending on your departure location. Additionally, you’ll receive 7 EUR per day as pocket money. To claim your travel refund, you’ll need to provide the organizers with your travel documents and payment receipts.
